The Charlie is a hotel in Old Sacramento built on a piece of history that happened two buildings down. The West Coast terminus of the Pony Express sat steps from the front door, and the property takes its name from Charlie — Carter Charlie Bronco — one of the youngest and fastest riders to ever carry the mail west.

We led the branding immersion: naming, positioning, and the strategy that decides what this place is before a single surface gets specified. The mark is a bronco mid-stride with Charlie riding it — motion, nerve, and a little bit of dust.

The interior direction leans into horses, leather, brass and old-world charm without tipping into costume. Warm, worn, and a bit theatrical, the way the district itself is.

We worked alongside HRGA on the architecture and with Mamba Hospitality as developer and operator, running guest experience touchpoint studies from the booking confirmation through arrival, the room, the bar, and the walk back out onto J Street.

Identity System

The Mark

A mark built from motion: Charlie mid-stride on the bronco, wrapped in a wordmark that reads like a signpost on a dusty street. The system runs from a full crest down to a single monogram, so it holds up on a matchbook and on a brick wall.
